Karen Barnitt

Karen left school at 16 and has had various different positions within her working life. Whilst working within Plymouth Council with elderly adults and disabled children ,  Karen decided to retrain  to become a qualified counsellor. Her first position as a therapist was within a residential drug & alcohol rehab unit for adults in Plymouth. Karen was delivering 1 to 1 counselling sessions and  group work. Karen has also been part of a charity delivering counselling within secondary schools in Plymouth.

From achieving her professional counselling qualification, Karen has gone on the become a qualified clinical supervisor, reach accredited status within her professional body (BACP), qualify and practice in EMDR,  and  achieve her CMI Foundation Chartered Manager grading.  Having joined First Light, initially as a counsellor, Karen is now the Therapeutic Team Manager, a role which she feels she is a privileged to have, and which brings her into daily contact with clients of all ages, and enables her to work with a fantastic team of therapist and  administrators. Although there are always new avenues to explore professionally , one of the current personal and professional ambitions Karen has is it to work with a therapy dog. This would combine her love of animals and her career.

Karen is married and has one son, one step son, a grandson and a “hectic” little dog, who she says all keep her busy when she is not at work.
