First Light and Together for Childhood Plymouth are advocating for the term “Violence Against Women and Girls” (VAWG) to be changed to “Violence Against Women and Children” (VAWC). This change aligns with the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, which states that anyone under the age of 18 should be recognised as a child, regardless of gender.
This change aims to remove barriers to support for children who have experienced or witnessed abuse. It ensures that anyone under 18 has equal access to support services. Key strategic partnerships established to tackle VAWG should also ensure that children receive the same level of support. Adopting VAWC will enhance safeguarding measures and ensure every child’s voice is heard and supported.
Thank you to Rebecca Smith MP (South West Devon) for highlighting the excellent partnership work happening across Plymouth. Her efforts have been instrumental in driving change and recognising the incredible people and organisations working in this space. We also thank her for raising our proposal to change VAWG to VAWC with Jess Phillips MP.
We call for a change in how we approach support for anyone under 18. Their gender should not define the support they can access. The VAWG strategy for Plymouth, and all VAWG initiatives, must address the needs of all children and be accessible to everyone.
