Specialist support for adults affected by sexual violence #

The Adult ISVA service at First Light provides trauma-informed, independent support to adults of all genders who have experienced sexual violence, whether recently or in the past. ISVAs offer emotional and practical guidance throughout the criminal justice process, and also support those who choose not to report, helping individuals understand their options and access recovery services.

What to Expect #

Adults accessing this service can expect:

  • A non-judgemental, confidential space to talk
  • A consistent point of contact throughout their journey
  • Clear information about the criminal justice process
  • Emotional support tailored to their needs
  • Advocacy with police, courts, and other professionals
  • Signposting to counselling, housing, legal aid, and other services

ISVAs do not ask for or record details of the incident itself, helping reduce the risk of re-traumatisation. Instead, they focus on empowering survivors to make informed choices and feel supported every step of the way.

Why People Access This Service #

Individuals may seek support from an ISVA if:

  • They have reported a sexual offence to the police and need help navigating the investigation and court process
  • They are considering reporting and want to understand their options
  • They have experienced sexual violence and want emotional support without engaging with the criminal justice system

Common questions include:

  • “What happens after I report?”
  • “Will I have to go to court?”
  • “Can I stop the investigation?”
  • “What are my rights?”
  • “Is it normal to feel this way?”

ISVAs provide clear, compassionate answers and help survivors feel less alone and more in control.

How This Helps #

Support from an ISVA can be life-changing. It helps survivors:

  • Understand their rights and options
  • Navigate complex systems with confidence
  • Feel validated and believed
  • Access practical help with housing, benefits, and legal matters
  • Build emotional resilience and begin recovery

ISVAs also advocate for survivors within multi-agency settings, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met.

Who Can Access This Support #

This service is available to anyone who have experienced sexual violence. Support is available whether or not the individual chooses to report to the police.
