Plymouth Therapy Update

Plymouth Therapy Update

PRESS RELEASE 23/07/2019

First Light are pleased to announce the expansion of their sexual violence counselling provision in Plymouth to include victims of historic sexual abuse.

The charity is asking people in Plymouth to get in touch if they have been affected by sexual violence to see if the therapy service is appropriate for them.

First Light has recently secured further grant funding for 3 years to re-establish the Historic Sexual Violence Counselling Service in Plymouth. We are delighted that these grants coupled with additional funding from the Ministry of Justice, have allowed us to expand our current counselling programme to reach many more people who very much need the support.

As part of this programme, First Light are delighted to have offered year-long placements to six counselling students from across Devon and Cornwall in their final year of study. The placement involved a highly specialized training programme to ensure they can safely work with victims of sexual violence.

Karen Barnitt, Therapy Team Leader ‘’We are proud to have been granted these funds for a service which is desperately needed. We’re also delighted to be able to offer the opportunity to educate and nurture, new and emerging counsellors into this specialist field of sensitive client work.’’

Cath Curno, Sexual Violence Services Director “This additional funding, and development of the service will enable more people to access specialist therapeutic support at a time when they most need it, no matter when the incident happened. Our services will offer many more people the opportunity to access free counselling so we can support them to cope, recover and move on stronger with their lives”.

For adult counselling in Plymouth, First Light can now offer an assessment to see if the service is suitable to anyone who is:

  • 18+
  • Has ever been a victim of sexual violence at any time in their lives (Including childhood sexual abuse)

We have 2 existing services for children and young people:

  • Counselling for 11-18’s
  • Art Therapy for 5 – 19’s

The counselling service is located close to the centre of Plymouth in a modern and comfortable building which is easily accessible. If you would like to find out more or make a referral please go to our website www.firstlight.org.uk or telephone 03458 121212.
