This morning Rt Hon Robert Buckland, the MP for South Swindon, Lord Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Justice visited the Swindon and Wiltshire SARC (Sexual Assault Referral Centre) to meet the staff who deliver the service, to thank them for their work and to ask questions.
He was delighted to attend the SARC and whilst in attendance he said: “It has been a real pleasure to be here today at the Swindon and Wiltshire SARC to meet Case Workers and to talk through some of the day to day issues that they face in supporting and helping victims of rape and of serious sexual offending.
“I am pleased to be spearheading initiatives to increase the number of Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVA) and to scale up the response and the support that the victims I believe deserve”
First Light’s CEO, Lyn Gooding also attended the SARC to meet with Robert Buckland MP to talk to him about the service that the First Light team at the SARC provide.
At the event, she said: “We need to be able to tell him what is actually going on in reality. I think Politicians have a view, however they do not always understand what victims are actually going through and the pressures that staff like us have to deliver our services as well.
“We need to educate communities and societies in general about sexual violence and domestic abuse. There are a lot of myths out there and we need to eradicate all of the views that people currently hold so that people have the confidence to come forward when they do experience abuse.”
